This course focuses on effectively teaching literacy at an elementary level. Literacy is an integral part of education and pre-service teachers must become experts on all facets of literacy instruction and assessment. From the concepts discussed in this course, I began to develop my Senior Honors Research Project. I created a project proposal focused on understanding the relationship between literacy practices in the classroom and the instruction which occurs in teacher education programs.

This education course focuses on meeting the differing needs of readers in the general education classroom. As an extension of the learning, I choose to focus on the needs of gifted readers. My goal was to create a tool which would provide my pre-service teacher peers, in-service teachers, and parents with information and strategies to meet the needs of gifted readers in and out of the classroom. Gifted readers are those students who are reading above grade level and have an advanced understanding of language. These students are often not a priority in the classroom because they are ahead of where they need to be unlike the many students who are often reading below grade level. Despite this, it is our responsibility to ensure the needs of all of our students are met. The infographic I created provides easy strategies to implement in the classroom and at home to provide a more meaningful reading experience for gifted readers. Originally, my goal was to host an event to present this information to families from the Phelps Center for Gifted Education in Springfield and to my peers at Drury University. However, due to the pandemic, this event was unable to be held.
