Examining the Gap in Pre-Service Teacher Instruction: The Relationship Between Literacy Assessment & Assessment Literacy
This project was my first real foray into the world of educational research. I desired to choose a topic which could be beneficial for the Drury community. Literacy assessments are an integral part of education, measuring the basic skills necessary for every content area. Teachers need to have a thorough understanding of the intricacies of various types of literacy assessments in order to develop their own assessment literacy. Despite its importance, there are inconsistencies in the theory and practice of literacy assessments. Because one often teaches the way they were taught, it is essential that teacher education programs include thorough instruction on the relationship between literacy assessment theory and literacy assessment practice in order to form adequate teacher assessment literacy. Due to unforeseen issues with a global pandemic, my original inquiries had to be modified. My findings became less about the data gathered and more about the terminology surrounding these education concepts. While the project had some bumps and revisions along the way, the biggest takeaway was the process as a whole. I am thankful for this opportunity to learn in a risk free environment and with the guidance of my professors.
